Birth of Venus Poster

The Birth of Venus by Botticelli (one of the early and more famous renaissance artist) is a very iconic painting. The painting is recognized around the world. The Birth of Venus from the sea as a young adult woman really paralleled my thoughts about young women in our modern world and new knowledge economy.

I wrestled with how to make her modern but at the same time to retain her iconic recognition. To begin with, I removed the wings from the couple on the top left. These figures have now become the parents giving support to their daughter’s direction. The new Venus is coming out of a computer mother-board representing the technology she grew up with. The new young adult Venus has far greater freedom to choose the when, where and how of her life.

More women than ever are now graduating from college, our new Venus is stepping into the new knowledge economy to be greeted by an older woman that resides under the tree of knowledge and the woman is prepared to wrap our new Venus in the garments of graduation.
